VIDYULLEKHA

OFFERING BY SRI SATHYA SAI INSTITUTE OF HIGHER LEARNING ALUMNI

Gratitude Corner

Sri Vaithilingam Mahalingam – Librarian Extraordinaire!

In Memoriam…

  • Arvind Yadavalli, Hyderabad, India, 1992-2000

Dear Sir,

Your ever ready soft smile, humility and understanding, navigating the labyrinth of the PSNC Institute library, self-motivation and innovation in building your own digital library Information system and most important, recognizing the need of the student and helping him in the best way possible. Sir, this is just the tip of the iceberg of the way you touched our lives.

When new books would arrive with content that you understood suited my thinking, or perhaps needed for my evolution, you would draw my attention to them, even hold a copy for me. And these books were not academic or course related, they were for Life Building.

To me you will always be an inspiration to keep the love for reading books, understanding the content, assimilating the knowledge and practicing the learning. I recollect you saying Books will always be your best companions as they only impart knowledge, they do not judge you or your abilities. And your understanding of the world will increase as you read more books.

Sir, I treasure your gift of a copy of Leading Consciously by Debashis Chatterjee. I read and re-read the book with each life lesson and the book offers a new meaning. My book collection, each one read, continues to expand, now digitally and I share the love for the written word fostered in me through Mentors like yourself, perhaps my way of paying it forward.

Thank you for fostering the bibliophile in me, Sairam Sir I will miss you!

Love,

Arvind

  • Raghavender G. Raju, Puttaparthi, 1997 to 2003

The Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning Central Library is in its current form due to efforts of Sri. V Mahalingam Sir. He was the one who has manually digitized the entry of every book in the library. He knew the name and location of every book. He was very loving and had lots of concern to all the students. He never said No. He would go all the way search and find the relevant book that the student was asking for. He was also very…very…devoted to Bhagawan.

  • Sai Prasad P.S.V.S, Hyderabad, 1992 to 1999

Sairam. I fondly remember sir as a matured person with abundant wisdom but thoroughly grounded. His smile is full of purity and one feels happy to be near him. He is one true individual who is contended within and it is very rare to find such individuals. In Jung’s terminology, he has attained self-actualization. He advised me to read few import books and also said about importance of being in teaching profession. By Swami’s grace I am in that profession still reading the books sir has suggested. Sairam.

  • Sai Gunaranjan P, Hyderabad, India, 2006 to 2008

He was a very kind soul. Always willing to help. May his kind soul rest in peace.

  • R, Anand Mehta, Chennai , India, 1990-1995

Sir was an epitome of love and patience. I remember going to the library hoping to see him and exchange a few words. Such was his personality. Never seen him raise his voice and always always helpful. He was also a storehouse of knowledge and could discuss any topic with confidence. Take rest Sir. You will be remembered forever by each and every one of us. “

  • Yashpal, Fatehabad, Haryana, 1995 to 1998

He was a very humble and down to earth; possibly i think he was from Srilanka. He was always smiling. That was his signature whenever we would enter the library.

  • Sai Roopak, Bangalore, 2000 to 2002

I had many opportunities to interact with him during my student days and after. During this period, he always looked forward to help any student in an obliging manner. He knew every book, its placement, project it would be helpful and looked out to get additional references beyond the ask as well. A very polite, kind hearted, noble and inspiring soul – someone we can all aspire to be!

  • Laxmikanth Nagulapalli, Hyderabad, India, 1996 to 2001

One of the most loving persons I have ever come across. He was the first few who have made me feel how loving Prasanthi Nilayam is. Being a Telugu medium student, I used to ask him for books which are in simple English and help me improve my language.  He was always there to guide me on this. Grateful. Sairam

  • Phanindra Varanasi, Mumbai, India, 1982-1989

Amidst the tall and silent silos of knowledge wrapped and packed in the racks of the library he was one who tried to bring humane touch with everyone and also unwrap to give insights and  make us feel and talk with every book we used . Touched and transformed every heart to be its true self – affectionate dedicated flower at Swami’s lotus feet- in the all immersive synergy of Prasanthi nilayam and spoke eloquently in its silent fragrance. Sir – May you find bliss in the eternal company of your dear Sai.

  • Patarla Srikanth, Puttaparthy, 1995 – 2001

One of the most inspiring people with a photographic memory at the age of 90+ years. A tireless warrior in action, a never say dye servant of the Lord. May He remain at HIS LOTUS FEET with ever smiling face. A True Silent Servant of the Lord

  • Ravikanth Jagarlapudi, Hyderabad, India, 1993 – 1998

Being one of the students who used to gorge books during my initial years, i was always found in the library either inside or outside on the cement bench under the trees. Meeting Mahalingam sir was regular and hence i remember his kind words and warm reach whenever i used to ask for extension. He had a swagger that none had and motivated all of us to read more deep and wide, one of my senior used to ask for Shakespeare’s voluminous books, sir used to dust them properly before giving it. A kind man and a kinder soul, May he Merge with Bhagawan permanently. Sairam

  • Murari M Mishra, Mumbai, 1997 to 2002

Sir was very thorough in his service. I had always seen him nurturing the library with interest. Many of the rare books were sourced by him and would find themselves in overnight section so everyone could get a share of the reading time. I have fond memories of time spent in library poring over books of my interest and seeing sir move about in between, encouraging students to make full use of the excellent resources. Sairam Sir.

  • Ajith Padyana, Bangalore and India, 2002-2009

Ever grateful to Swami for giving such a noble soul to us! For us, Library means Lingam Sir. Paying my respect to the departed Soul! Sairam

  • Vikram Tiruchanur, Thiruvananthapuram, 1995 to 2000

Moving library. Great gentleman. I have not seen anyone equal to him after leaving SSSIHL. Sai Ram.

  • Swarup Chilumkuru, Hyderabad, India, 1995 to 1997

Dear Sir – I still remember the sparkle in your eyes whenever I reached out for any help in locating a book or journal in our vast library. You left a great impression with your kindness, simplicity and care. You were a chosen gem by our beloved Swami and the service you rendered is unparalleled. Thank you Sir for being there in our lives and you will always be our beloved Librarian Sir. With deep gratitude and Sairam. (Swarup MFM)

  • Sri Ram S, Bangalore India, 1997 to 2004

Mahalingam sir was super popular among students. Very approachable, organised and knowledgeable everybody loved him and looked up to him. I derive inspiration from him on performing one’s duty with love, devotion and dedication. Thank you sir for your service and inculcating love of books and reading in us.

  • Kamesh Janakiraman, Bangalore, 1995 to 1998

I have been a great beneficiary during this time at the library. He would always keep the best selection of text, references and journals for any chosen topic! All I have to do is let him know the topic I intend to refer before starting from college for evening Darshan. I loved our conversation while we walk from Mandir to library loaded with knowledge and many a times with brilliant anecdotes of his Experiences with Swami.

  • Gopal Rao, Mumbai, 1988-1990

I first met Sir in the Library in May 1988 and till day never forgot the smile with which he greeted me. He and I hit it off immediately as both of us were lovers of Bhagawan Sri Ramana Maharshi. He shared that his son studying in Parthi was named Ramana. I was a voracious reader. I used to borrow other classmates unused library cards and borrow more books than my quota. Mahalingam Sir kept feeding me with the latest books of my interest as he saw in me a hunger for reading. We had many talks. What never left me was his smile, his service and abiding love for students. He was one person who impacted me with who he was BEING more than anything else. I was saddened by his departure from this planet but am clear that his was a life well used up in serving. My love and salutations to his son Sai Ramana and would love it if he could get in touch with me.

  • D. Vijay Krishna, Bangalore, India, 1996 To 2000

He was always smiling and ready to help with regards to any book, information and insights. I particularly liked his English accent and his command over English. During my U.G times, I have read lot of spiritual books ranging from theosophy to philosophy and human psychology. I give this credit to Swami and Mahalingam sir. I do remember his son who was my senior at that time. I used to consider him very lucky and fortunate to be born to someone like Mahalingam sir. I am sure sir would have attained moksha for his selfless service to so many students spanning so many years. I am thankful and grateful to Swami for bringing together so many wonderful people in one place for our benefit and spiritual growth. Jai Sai Ram.

  • Ravi Teja B, Puttaparthi, India, 1985-90

Very soft spoken, always smiling. Man of wisdom and always has something nice to share from his vast experience. Never cared for his own problems and was very empathetic. I am sure he has merged in Bhagawan’s lotus feet. Rest in peace, sir. Sairam.

  • Ramakrishna R, Chennai, 1997 to 2000

A Librarian is as important to the academic culture of an institution as the head of any major department. In Sri Mahalingam sir, we had a silent yet dynamic icon for all the values that SSSIHL stood for.  To me, personally, he was a silent benefactor who helped me nurture my interest in international relations and military tech by giving me access to the treasured Time Magazine and Scientific American archives. The archives used to be on the first and second floors and needed special authorisation to be accessed. He would just wave me through any day… My ever grateful pranams to him.

  • Jai Ganesh , Puttaparthi, India, 1995 to 2002

Very many times during our college days, sir had helped us towards locating books with his precise guidance regarding the floor, shelf, rack in which the book we are looking for is – right from his cabin and straight out of his memory! Also he wouldn’t hesitate to walk upstairs to assist us if we aren’t able to locate the books ourselves. During my MBA project days and after I had completed the course, sir had been very helpful to me on a topic which I had been working on. Even after he had a surgery in Canada and was moving around in Prasanthi Nilayam with a walker I have noticed him going to the library either in college campus or in ashram to be of assistance. Such was his enthusiasm, dedication and willingness to help. Sir, you were an inspiration to me and so many other students. I am sure you are now with our beloved Swami. My prayers with the family. Sai Ram.

  • Dr Jitendra Sharma, MD & CEO- AMTZ, Vizag, India, 2000-2003

Book I authored and came on Amazon on Jan 29th 2022, with the Title Made in Lockdown describing India’s progress in medical technology is my offering to Library in remembrance of Mahalingam sir. This legendary librarian showed me the possibilities that today made me an author from a reader that I was, when he blessed me with his love and care in the library. Mahalingam sir, please do read my book and keep it in your heavenly library; bless me to do more service and keep your eyes always on my books, numbering them with your smiles and polished cataloguing.

  • Anchoori Sandeep, Hyderabad, India, 2003-2005

Sir was amazing, he was a perfectionist… He was so loving and caring for students… He used to work with so much dedication and love. .. Your absence will be always felt sir…our prayers to swami…

  • Dr. Naresh K N, Puttaparthi, India, 2003 to 2005

It was always a great learning and joyous experience interacting with Mahalingam sir. There was never a dull moment with him. He was always bubbling with enthusiasm and energy. One thing that I will always remember about Mahalingam sir is his mentioning about the book “SAVITHRI” and a chapter named ‘The Vision and the Boon’. He used to tell that Swami Avataric nature and role of Sai Students is very nicely detailed in that chapter. Even now I am overwhelmed reading the chapter from the book. But for Mahalingam sir, I would not have known this. And there are many such nice things which Mahalingam sir used share with us about our Dear Lord Sai. With his Love towards Swami, I am sure Mahalingam sir would have found merger with Swami and will remain an immortal soul.

  • Prasad YTG, Edison, NJ, USA, 1992-1999

Sometimes actions speak louder than words, it is that experience that I have with Sir, We have not spoken much but he did convey through his smile and benevolent actions a lot in my academic pursuit in Puttaparthi, forever and ever I am grateful to him and Bhagawan for introducing us such great souls. May god bless his soul.

  • Sivaram Inguva, Hyderabad, India, 1992 to 1997

Mahalingam Sir is synonymous to a great new book and influence it can bring to a reader. Sir always encouraged us to read new books and understand the essence rather than mere reading. He always guided me to find right book whenever I am stuck. I can’t probably find right word or sentence to express his influence on me. When i find a new book to read I always remember his smile and encouragement to grab the essence. The influence of great book always lives on and so is Mahalingam sir’s legacy…

  • Tumu Vijaya Kumar, India, 1999-2002

Humble, approachable.

  • M G Nanda Gopal, Bangalore, India ,1977- 81 / 82-84

He was a Gentleman to the core. Professionally sound yet humanly approachable. He was what we call a Reference Librarian. A walking encyclopaedia and yet when it came to enhancement of knowledge, he was always in forefront. Be it researchers, staff, students he was always doled out the best to them, appraising them of the latest in their field.

In the field of classification he saw to it that Sai Literature got a unique no. of ‘ 9 ‘ and implemented it too in the regular scheme of things. And as somebody pointed out he was so good that he would find the books whenever others had the difficulty of getting it. Personally to me and my elderly colleagues Muralidharan Sir and Sekhar Sir he was a mentor and a guide to deal with various aspects in the Library. Ever Grateful for that! He had paved the way to the computerization of library data. Above all he was a very good Human Being, intensely passionate about the Best of his knowledge to be offered at His Lotus Feet. May His soul rest in Eternal Peace at His Lotus Feet with life fulfilled.

He will continue to inspire us ever and ever!

Sairam!

  • M. Sainath, Hyderabad, India, 1985 to 1990

One of the most pleasant and sincere person I had the good fortune of living with. Epitomised Swami’s teaching “Love all serve All”. Still use some of the lessons learnt from him in my daily life. Rest in peace sir.

  • Raghavendra A, Bangalore, India, 1981 to 1995

I have had the privilege of interacting with Sri Mahalingam during 1990 to 95, when I studied in SSSIHL, PSN. Sri Mahalingam stood out and made a strong impression on everyone who came across him. His warm persona and a smile always on his face, he was ever eager to help everyone who went to the library. His eagerness to help find a book, his compassion to say a kind word or his love in greeting with a sweet smile was the qualities that endeared all. I haven’t sat in classroom taught by Sri Mahalingam. But I have learnt the precious lesson of ABC of life. Always be cheerful. By his conduct, he has chiselled the minds and hearts of every soul, who interacted with him. Sairam

  • Rajkumar Jain, Bangalore, India, 1983-85

The ever smiling and eager to help face of Sri Mahalingam is etched in my mind forever. A thorough gentleman who was keen to help any student or faculty member from any campus at any time would naturally leave behind hundreds of admirers praying for his eternal rest. I just loved watching him enjoying Swami’s Darshan and that was an eye opener for me. Duty with love was embodied by Sri Mahalingam.

Thank you Swami for making us contemporaries of Sir Mahalingam.

  • Ashok Sundaresan, Trichy, 1990 to 1995

When we enter our SSSIHL library, Mahalingam Sir was an effervescent presence on the right side of the entrance, acknowledging your entrance with a friendly nod. Always smiling, a pat on the back, ever eager to help in the knowledge acquisition of the Student, you can approach sir for any help about any book. His beaming smile ensured that you never felt unwelcome. He is an integral part of our Vidyarthi phase. We pray to Swami for his Satgati.

  • N Sivakumar, Bangalore, 1982-1989-1994 (PUC to PhD)

Sairam. I was blessed to do research at Prasanthinilayam at a time when Respected Mahalingam sir was most active. He was a walking Google. He knew so much about every conceivable subject and we depended on him completely. Sir, your presence was a great strength to us. You served Swami so wonderfully. Continue blessing and guiding us always. We will miss you sir. Sairam.

  • R Prusty, Prasanthi Nilayam,1996 to 1998

Your love for books and your eagerness to help others find books was contagious. Your smiling countenance attracted me. You increased my love for books. You will for ever be in the stories of His students.”

  • Sateesh Tadur, New York, NY,1990-1995

He was always helpful and his knowledge on a broad range of subjects expansive. A true gentleman. He went out of his way to help students including going out of town to procure a book for me. Even after Moved out, I would make a point to visit and speak to him. Sad to hear the news of him passing away. May his family have the strength to get through this loss.

  • Arnel Ramdath, Trinidad & Tobago,1991-1994

Our families reached the doorsteps of the various Sai Institutions at the same time. Appa & Amma took on the roles as our adoptive parents/guardians. Their home became our home. Their meals became our meals. Their time was our time, taking care of us, showering us with so much love that words will never suffice. Your selfless love has filled our hearts with gratitude. You have personified Swami’s words: “Seva lo palgonandi, anni gunaaloo vachi cherataayi – Do Seva, and all virtues will follow”.

Thank you Appa for all the wonderful memories. We were fortunate to have met you along our Sai journey. May you enjoy serving Bhagawan directly now. Sai Ram.”

  • Abhimanyu Kaul, Markham,1985 to 1990

Very soft spoken, loving and caring fatherly figure. Blessed to be associated with him in Toronto, Canada too. He was always gracious in blessing and shared love by his devoted presence. I am sure he has reached his final destination, the lotus feet of Bhagawan Baba.

  • Haresh Mirpuri, Bangalore ,1980 to 1993

There are some members of our institute who are the silent angels of our beloved Swami. A disciplinarian yet had so much patience. He didn’t talk much but he helped us look for the right sources when asked. I remember Swami teaching me during my MBA “Speak when asked, not otherwise”. Sir is a true personification of the same. Blessed are we to have them as Swami’s angels to guide His students.

  • Chandrasekaran C, Chennai, India, 1992 to 95

My habit of reading books started from the time I joined our University in 92. The warmth and the genuine smile he had on his face when you greet him are still fresh in my memory.

Seeing my interest in learning, beyond my academic topics, in brief discussions in the Librarian room he used to help me with books.

The world famous book that created a lot of controversy ‘Lajja’ by Taslima Nasrin, I still remember him giving it to me even before it was made available for rest of the students.

Then there was a time – when I fought over a book that had limited copies. I remember him calling me and suggested not to extend but to give it to another classmate. When I refused – he advised me why my approach is not in good spirit.

There was a time when I was looking for a book. Without referring to any records, he mentioned not just the rack – but also what would be the other books adjacent to it. No guess – yes I traced in a matter of 5 minutes in the 2nd floor of our Library.

Swami’s love for all and students in particular was expressed in many ways. One such way was to have such noble souls be around us – so that we can get inspired by them.

Thank you sir – for being a teacher – without being one – in the real sense.

Dear Arvind, you have so beautifully summarised the life of one of the best librarians and teachers which any university in India can ever have. We were truly fortunate to have grown up amidst such teachers who were not just treasure houses of knowledge but were equally passionate about sharing the same wisdom with us.

I will always remember Sir as someone who was so well read, passionate about his role as a librarian, impeccable and inimitable style of speaking which exuded sophistication, ever helpful to guide his students where we can find the right book and extremely humble.

Back in 90’s, we didn’t have the luxury of an advanced Google search engine but with Sir around – searching the right books and doing our research was so easy with his counsel. My condolences and prayers for his soul to lovingly merge in Our Master ❤️

Reading through the obituary, I realise how fortunate we were to have lived with saints like Sri.Mahalingam at Prasanthi Nilayam for such a long time. His life was a complete expression of fulfilment as much as when he passed away on a day when the doors of heaven open. When I met him in Arun Uthayan’s house in Canada I found him radiant robust and lively despite physical discomforts of advancing age. In fact Bhagawan took me to Arun’s place to learn true sthitaprajnata, Sthairyam and Arjawam. For sure Sri Mahalingam has merged with Beloved Sai. Jai Sai Ram
